Corns: Why They Hurt and What Can Be Done About Them

Corns are small, thickened areas of skin that form when your skin tries to protect itself from repeated pressure or friction. Unlike a broad callus, a corn is smaller, deeper, and has a hard center, which is why it can be much more painful.

They are commonly caused by:

  • shoes that squeeze or rub

  • repeated pressure on the same spot

  • toe shape or foot structure that creates friction over and over again

What corns feel like

Corns can cause tenderness or pain under the skin, especially when pressure is put directly on them. That is why walking with a corn can make every step feel sore, sharp, or irritating in the exact same spot.

The problem with corns

They do not just sit on the surface.
They have a deeper hard center, which is why simply scrubbing the top often is not enough.

Why regular salons do not solve the problem

At a regular salon, they may smooth the surface a little, but they do not know how to properly reduce a corn and do not have the right tools to remove the deeper core.

That means the corn may look a little better for the moment, while the part that is actually causing the pain is still there.

How we treat corns

At Columbus Podology, we use gentle but effective techniques and tools to reduce corns properly.

In fact, we are so gentle that we have had many clients fall asleep during corn reduction.

Corn reduction is included with any pedicure. We customize each service to the needs of the client, so if we see that a corn needs attention, we take care of it.

How this compares

Regular salons

  • scrub the surface

  • do not remove the deeper core

  • do not have the right equipment

Doctor’s offices

  • may trim the corn with a scalpel, potentially leaving you sore

  • may use medicated salicylic acid patches, which can irritate healthy skin

  • some corn care may be covered by insurance, but visits are usually limited

Columbus Podology

  • gentle, targeted corn reduction

  • comfortable treatment

  • included with any pedicure

  • customized to what your feet actually need

Why regular care matters

Corns usually come back over time because the pressure and friction that caused them are often still there.

That is why corn reduction is not usually a one-time fix. It often needs to be done regularly to keep you comfortable.

Our goal is not just to make your feet look smoother. We want you to walk with less pain, feel more comfortable, and get care that actually addresses the problem.
